The son of Verglas is his own character but when things fall right for him and he gets his favoured soft ground, he is a talented sprinter.

Apprentice Thomas Brown was having his first ride for the stable and he was keen to settle Steps towards ther rear.

He travelled sweetly before moving up to join the leaders with two furlongs left to run.

In typical Steps fashion, he didn't make life easy and he went left and then right before hitting the front and going on to score well by a length and a half.

Roger said: "Steps has a mind of his own but on soft ground and with Thomas' claim, we thought he had a good chance today."

At Newbury, Aljamaaheer put up a career best display to finish third in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.

Unfortunately there was a sad footnote to the day when Tefflah suffered a fatal injury in the 1m4f maiden at Thirsk
