The son of Verglas, owned by Michael Hill, is a real character but when it falls right for him, he is high-level sprinter.

Kieren Fallon was aboard for the first time today and he settled Steps towards the rear of the field during the early stages.

His old foe Eton Rifles was up with the pace and Steps went in pursuit with a furlong to go.

He hit the front a little earlier that ideal but stayed on to beat the rallying Eton Rifles by a neck.

Roger said: "A stronly run five furlongs on easy ground is right up Steps' street. He is a real favourite in the yard and this was arguably a career best under a penalty."

Another yard legend, Eton Forever put up a creditable performance to finish third in the Group 3 Jury Stakes on the same card.
