Owned by Paul Smith, the three-year-old finished a head second on his racecourse debut at Newcastle in the autumn, and he put that experience to good use here when dispatching a nine-strong field by a very cosy three and three-quarter lengths.

A strapping son of Dutch Art from the family of legendary broodmare Hasili, Bowerman sat second under Andrea Atzeni having broken reasonably from stall seven.

Frankie Dettori set moderate fractions on second favourite Blue On Blue, but as he came under pressure entering the final quarter mile Andrea let Bowerman stride on and he put the race to bed in tidy fashion.

Bowerman will now be allotted a handicap mark and his sights are likely to be kept at that level on his next start.

Roger said: “Bowerman is a fine physical specimen and his work this spring has been good. I don’t think this was a deep race, but he won as he pleased and he’s still learning about racing. His opening mark shouldn’t be too tough and he can only go on from here.”
