Valyrian Steel made the perfect start to his career with an eye-catching run in the 1m2f maiden at Newcastle under a cool ride from David Egan. Slow to get into stride, this scopey son of Frankel had to be settled well back in the field by David, but on turning in he began to pick up nicely and the long straight at Newcastle gave him plenty of time to hit top gear. With a furlong to run he still had his work cut out, but he knuckled down and lengthened all the way to the line, eventually winning a touch cosily by a neck.

Unraced at two, this well bred son of the unbeaten Frankel, was purchased for €600,000 by Oliver St Lawrence from Arqana. His four-year-old full brother Syrtis was twice placed at Group 3 level last year and is a dual winner. This colt is a stunning individual and clearly very capable so he will be an exciting horse to go to war with this year.
