Fillies to the fore as good form continues

Mon 05 Nov 2018

FILLIES have come to fruition for Varian Stable in recent days as Contrive continued her progress on a synthetic surface when landing a competitive-looking handicap at Kempton on Monday evening, while Gilded Heaven broke her maiden in fine fashion when landing division one of the mile handicap at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Owned by Miss Yvonne Jacques, Contrive has improved significantly for a drop in trip in recent starts, routing a fair field at Lingfield to get off the mark last month, while she was agonisingly collared close home when posting a career-best effort back in handicap company at Newmarket twelve days ago.

Returned to the all-weather and given a positive ride by David Egan tonight, the daughter of Mastercraftsman travelled strongly towards the head of proceedings before lengthening nicely at the two-furlong marker.

Challengers loomed on either flank in a tightly-knit affair but Contrive showed a fine attitude when eyeballed inside the last, knuckling down to her task in gritty fashion to fend off the sustained bid of Golden Iris by three-quarters of a length, with a further half-length back to Private View in third.

On Saturday, Gilded Heaven made light of an opening mark of 65 when recording her first win at the fifth time of asking under a confident ride by Tony Hamilton.

The home-bred daughter of Medicean, who boasts a Cheveley Park Stud pedigree through-and-through being out of the Pivotal mare Heavenly, was forced to miss the majority of the summer through injury, but she quickly made up for lost time when getting the better of the in-form Billy Bond by a comfortable half-length.

Roger said: “Contrive has really thrived through the autumn and these conditions suit her well. She looks capable of continuing her progress under similar circumstances as we head into the winter. Gilded Heaven shaped well in competitive company in the spring and she should win more races at the right sort of level.”
