Defoe reigns at Ascot

Sat 22 Jun 2019

Following his scintillating victory in the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom three weeks ago, Defoe provides his owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid with another brilliant triumph in the G2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

This year's Royal Meeting will go down as a week to remember with the evergreen Defoe adding to Daahyeh's superb victory in the G3 Albany Stakes. This 5yo son of Dalakhani was fresh from Group 1 victory in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and he confirmed that career best performance with an equally dominate display on the biggest stage of all at Royal Ascot. Defoe is the coolest customer and he showed his class today, not turning a hair on what was a hot mid-summer day, and although he didn't have the clearest of runs in the straight, he tenaciously muscled his way through the gaps under Andrea Atzeni to burst to the lead with a furlong to run. The Czech raider Nagano Gold was closing late inside the final 50yds but Defoe was always doing enough to provide Varian Stable with a second win of the week.
