Byron caps off a memorable day to provide five-timer

Sat 22 Jun 2019

Winners were the order of the day with Cape Byron adding to Defoe's Hardwicke victory with a scintillating display in the Wokingham Stakes and a winner at Lingfield added to a double at Newmarket to make it five winners for the day on a Saturday to remember for Varian Stable.

Cape Byron was having his first outing over 6f having won the Victoria Cup at the course 6 weeks ago, but the trip proved no concern and he justified strong favouritism with a dominant display in one of the week's most competitive handicaps. Who knows what could be next for this 5yo son of Shamardal who has proven himself a high class horse over six and seven furlongs.

At Newmarket Moqtarreb and Jaleel provided a double at the track with an impressive four length romp in the 1m novice and victory in the lucky last. Moqtarreb was having his third start of the season having run a blinder on his seasonal debut and he showed an eye-catching turn of foot to win in decisive fashion. Like Moqtarreb, Jaleel was posting the first success of his career having hit the board on a number of occasions. He was held up under Jack Mitchell before making strong headway as the field entered the dip and he found plenty for pressure to win by a neck.

The third Varian Stable trainee to break their maiden today was the scopey 3yo daughter of Mastercraftsman called Specialise. She was making her handicap debut and overcame a wide draw to win in good style under Charlie Bennett.

Today's five-timer has brought the season's total to 51 on what will go down as a day to remember for the whole team.
