Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, the son of Shamardal landed a well-contested Newmarket maiden last autumn and he built handsomely on that form upped in trip here, travelling powerfully under Andrea Atzeni before tanking into the lead two furlongs from home.

Fire Brigade began to gather a real head of steam against the stand-side rail and with Cape Byron isolated in the centre of the track, Andrea brought him across to eyeball his sole market rival and the pair engaged in a thrilling dual inside the final furlong, Cape Byron showing a fine attitude to prevail by a neck with the pair pulling seventh lengths clear of Fox Trotter in third.

A homebred half-brother to Ajman Princess, last month’s Prix Jean Romanet winner who is set to line-up in the Prix Vermeille on Sunday, Cape Byron is a strapping chestnut with bundles of potential and he is likely to have his sights raised next time out.

Roger said: “Cape Byron is a lovely horse and his homework has always suggested he boasts plenty of ability. He travelled beautifully here and showed an excellent attitude to fend off a progressive horse on ground that was probably too soft, so this was a really pleasing return.

“I will discuss his options with Sheikh Mohammed Obaid before making a plan moving forward, but he is certainly one to look forward to both for the rest of this season and for his four-year-old career next year.”
