100 up at Wolves on Saturday

Mon 19 Nov 2018

THE TALLY began with the success of Zabeel Prince on the opening weekend of the season at Doncaster in March and 239 days further down the line the century of winners for the calendar year was completed by Shagalla, who broke her maiden at the fourth attempt when winning the extended one mile nursery at Wolverhampton on Saturday evening.

And in true London-bus fashion, winner number 101 was notched a mere thirty minutes later as Mackaar finished with a flourish to get up in the shadows of the post and land the extended nine-furlong novice, completing a double on the evening for jockey Jack Mitchell.

Owned by Nurlan Bizakov, Shagalla shaped with promise in her first three outings in novice company and switched to the handicap ranks off an opening mark of 72, she showed improved form in first-time blinkers to take advantage of a collapsing pace and collar the David Evans-trained Elegant Love by half a length.

A daughter of Lawman who is a half-sister to the talented duo Shymkent and Shaherezada, Shagalla is from the family of the magnificent producer Shastye, making her a close relation to Oaks runner-up Secret Gesture, Australian Group performer Sir Isaac Newton and the 3,400,000 guineas Galileo colt who was knocked down to M V Magnier at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale this year.

Later on the card, the Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum-owned Mackaar put the benefit of his promising debut fourth at Kempton to good use when appreciating the step up in trip to break his maiden by a last-gasp short-head.

The son of Cape Cross, who is out of a sister to Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai, wore-down warm favourite King Of Change, with a further length and a quarter back to Amjaady in third place in what looked a useful race on paper beforehand.

Roger said: “Shagalla is a willing filly who was well-suited by the strong early gallop and her attitude should stand her in good stead moving forward. Mackaar shaped really nicely at Kempton and he’s improved for this trip. He could develop into a nice type for next year.”
