Facilities

VARIAN Stable is lucky to operate out of two historic racing yards set right in the heart of Newmarket.

There are 148 boxes at Carlburg Stables on the Bury Road and an additional 25 at Green Lodge located next to the Severals.

Both yards are just a short walk to the historic Limekilns and Al Bahathri gallops located on the east edge of the town, but are still within walking distance to the extensive Racecourse Side gallops to the west.

Warren Hill and the trotting rings at the Severals are also just minutes from the property, providing all-year-round access to the best racehorse training facilities in the world, all of which are maintained to the highest standards by the dedicated team at Jockey Club Estates.

Carlburg Stables

Carlburg Stables is an expansive seven-acre property boasting 148 boxes and a wide array of private training facilities set amongst idyllic grounds on Newmarket's highly-renowned Bury Road.

Formerly occupied by legendary trainer Clive Brittain, who built an impressive empire during his tenure here between 1975 and 2017, Carlburg has seen a who's-who of equine stars pass through its doors.

They include wonder-mare Pebbles, who became the first British-trained horse to capture a Breeders' Cup prize when landing the 1985 renewal of the Turf, and User Friendly, the triple-Oaks and dual-Classic winning champion whose all-conquering campaign in 1992 included victory in the St Leger and defeat by a mere neck in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Overall, Clive trained almost 60 Group 1 winners here, including six Classic successes.

Clive retired at the end of the 2015 Flat season and Roger bought the premises the following year, with Varian Stable relocating from Kremlin House Stables on the Fordham Road to Carlburg in February 2017.

Equine Swimming Pool

The equine swimming pool is a crucial training aid. Swimming horses helps to build muscle tone and improves cardiovascular fitness and is used both as an additional form of exercises to those in full work, as well as a form of rehabilitation to those horses who are returning from injury. The pool is also an excellent way of keeping horses mentally stimulated, providing a fun and alternative aspect to their daily routine.

Private trotting ring

Carlburg also feautres a newly-refurbished 400-metre outdoor trotting ring, which is used for warm-up and cool-down exercise before and after work on the Heath. The ring is also an excellent facility for educating young horses in the early part of their lives, as well providing a space to exercise for those horses on a reduced-training programme.

Horse walkers

Calrburg has five horse walkers, which are used for individuals who are going through periods of rehabilitation, need to be walked before they are ridden or are just on walking exercise without a rider.

Heat lamps

A number of the stables are fitted with heat lamps, which help individuals acclimatise to warmer temperatures if they are due to race abroad as well as helping horses maintain their gleaming summer coats.

Woodlands Stables

A 60-stable yard, Woodlands is just yards from Warren Hill and the Severals trotting rings. The yard has use of a horse walker and each stable is fitted with a heat lamp. Many of our two-year-olds are currently housed here.
