  • Age: Older Horse
  • DOB: 03/03/2014

Description

Chesnut gelding by Shamardal / Reem Three (Mark Of Esteem). Homebred. Cape Byron is out of a Listed-placed daughter of Mark Of Esteem in Reem Three. He is a half-brother to 102-rated winner Naqshabban and G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Ajman Princess, trained by Roger.

Cape Byron won a warm Newmarket maiden on his second start as a juvenile before making a striking reappearance in classfied company at Ascot in September 2017. He then finished third in the Prix Le Fabuleux (Listed) at Chantilly at the back end of his three-year-old campaign. In 2018, Cape Byron has stepped out at three of the big festival meetings, producing good performances and none more so than at Glorious Goodwood where he was only beaten a length in the Golden Mile Handicap.

On his 2019 seasonal reappearance he proved what a smart horse he is by winning the highly competitive Victoria Cup at Ascot, which was a well-deserved victory for a very consistent horse. He dropped back to 6f for his next start in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot where he stormed to victory earning himself an entry in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket. Sadly he couldn't quite handle the go the pace as the field quickened, but he by no means disgraced himself being beaten 7 1/4 lengths by the winner. He ran another good race back over 7f at York in the G2 City Of York Stakes, finishing third behind Shine So Bright and Laurens. After a fantastic season his deserved Group-race breakthrough came at his beloved Ascot, Andrea Atzeni producing him with a strong run to win the G3 Bengough Stakes over six furlongs in ground he had until then been unproven in. He couldn't build on that in the G1 on Champions Day over the same C&D and finished 8L behind the winner who he'd beaten well in the Bengough.
