Chesnut gelding by Exceed And Excel / Annabelle’s Charm (Indian Ridge). Homebred. Spanish City is a half-brother to the 2014 Middle Park Stakes winner Charming Thought. His dam won in Listed company and is related to Group 1 winners Ballingarry, Aristotle and Starborough.

Spanish City followed up his length and a quarter defeat in the 2018 Victoria Cup with a gutsy win in a 7f Class 3 Handicap at Doncaster, making two wins for the season. He ran a blinder to dead-heat for second in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket's July Meeting and then produced another consistent performance to be beaten just a length and a quarter into sixth in the International Stakes on King George day at Ascot. He returned to Ascot on his next start and ran another great race to finish fourth, but unfortunately he found himself on the wrong side of the track and had to commit for home very early.

Now a 6yo, Spanish City doesn't know how to run a bad race. He returned to action at Newmarket in May where he was narrowly beaten in a Class 3 handicap over 7f. He dropped back to 6f on two subsequent starts, going close in a Class 2 handicap at Newmarket's July Course. He ran another blinder to finish fourth, beaten 1 1/4 lengths, in the Bunbury Cup at the July Meeting. He was back in the winner's enclosure at Yarmouth where he won a small field 7f handicap under Jack Mitchell. He raced prominently in a competitive handicap at Ascot next time where he ran well to finish fifth, beaten only 1 length. He ran a great race for 7lb claimer Marco Ghiani to finish a close second in the Class 2 handicap (0-105) at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Meeting.
